About the Department

The Department of English of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, University of Delhi, came into existence with the very foundation of the college in 1991, relentlessly serving the college corporate life since the day one. keeping in mind the vision of Babasaheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar who firmly believed that English is indispensable for the empowerment of the marginalised multitude. Dr. Ambedkar maintained with conviction that English should remain an official language of India even on the face of hostility to English from some sections of Constituent Assembly. Dr. Ambedkar famously compared English to the milk of a lioness which imparted strength to the ones that drink it.

The Department of English, DRBRAC started in 1991 under the aegis of late Dr. Pramila Batra, the founding figure, who was joined later by Dr C P Sharma (retired in 2010), Dr Manju Ailawadhi (retired in 2020) and Ms Archna Mathur. Ms Archna Mathur (Associate Professor) is currently the seniormost faculty of the Department. The Department of English is being served by Professor Sunita Malik and Professor Sanjeev Kumar since 2000 (the latter was already working as an ad-hoc teacher in DRBRAC since 1997). Ms Ningombam Victoria Chanu (Associate Professor) and Dr Tamal Dasgupta (Associate Professor) joined the Department of English in 2008 .

In the past, the Department of English has been enriched by many ad-hoc colleagues, two of whom continue to work to this date in 2025, Dr Madhuresh Pathak Mishra and Dr Shipra Singh. The English Department faculties are a unique mix of youth and experience, critical and creative flourish, spontaneity and professional commitment, research mentorship in literature and motivational guidance in language.

The Department of English continues to be actively engaged in the teaching-learning process of the college, providing English SEC and VAC courses to the entire college, and GE English language courses to BA (Prog) and BCom (Prog) students. Under NEP, the Department of English has started offering English Major and Minor to the BA (Prog) students. Starting from the 2024-25 session, the English Department now offers English Minor degree to various other Honours students from other Departments who study English GE (Honours). In the past CBCS and annual systems, we offered English Discipline course, and in FYUP the Department of English offered English Honours. A Departmental memorandum to restart English Honours has been freshly submitted in the session 2024-25, and is pending approval of authority. Also a proposal for an English Language Lab has been submitted in the session 2024-25.

Every year, the Department of English organizes invited lectures on literature and language, holds creative writing and essay writing workshops, conducts its own orientation programme for the first semester English Major and Minor students, and offers advanced mentorship to students of English.

The alumni of the Department of English are illustrious and they have made us proud time and again. Many of our ex-students are employed as high-ranking officials in Government sectors (including civil services) and Corporate sectors. Some have joined academic profession and are now mentors themselves.

Globalization is not a mere cliche at the Department of English. We empower our students to be global thinkers, enable them to sail through the critical challenges of the current age of globalization with confidence.
